AfterWorks 2026-2027: CHAMBER MUSIC LAB Registration Form

Introduction

The AMFS Chamber Music Lab program is open to students in grades 4+ who are working at or beyond a Double Black Diamond level (at the end of Suzuki and/or Essential Elements Book 1). In this program, students will work in small groups to develop ensemble skills, learn new music and techniques, and expand independent musicianship with a dedicated ensemble coach. Students receive a series of private lessons as well as performance opportunities throughout the school year to showcase their progress. Learn more.

The Aspen Music Festival and School's AfterWorks programming (after-school music education) also includes Beginning Strings, Lead Guitar and Maroon Bel Canto Choirs. Students are welcome to participate in multiple programs.

Program Application

Chamber Music Lab - Day, Time & Location

Chamber Music Lab participants will be formed into small ensembles as soon as possible according to age, experience, and location. Ensembles will meet weekly between mid-October through early May for one-hour coachings with their Chamber Music Lab Coach.

Ensemble rehearsal schedules will be set up at the beginning of the year with 2 excused absences per semester. Please select your preferred location followed by any other location that could also work for your student. Students will be formed into small ensembles according to requests and additional locations will help us find the best musical fit for your student's group.

Your AMFS Scholarship Instrument

To continue using this AMFS scholarship instrument, you must apply for an instrument scholarship in the "Scholarship Application" section below. Your Chamber Music Lab coach will evaluate the condition of your instrument at the start of the rehearsal series and will check to ensure that it is still the correct size for you. If you are again granted an instrument scholarship, the instrument will then be checked back out to you or replaced with a correct size.

Securing An Instrument

If you are accepted into the Chamber Music Lab program and we have received your tuition payment (or your tuition scholarship request has been approved, if applicable), you will receive information about securing an instrument.

Families can submit a request (below) to be considered for an AMFS instrument scholarship or a subsidized rental, which range from $0-25/month. Because our inventory of scholarship instruments is limited, we may not be able to accommodate every request.
If you do not submit a instrument scholarship application (or if you were not awarded one), we encourage you to rent or purchase an instrument directly from one of the recommended shops below:

Program Cost and Scholarship Information

Chamber Music Lab Program Cost: $415

Cost includes coachings, ensemble repertoire, and three hours of private lessons (lessons alone are valued at $240!). This program is heavily subsidized by the AMFS and generous donors--thank you, donors!

Students are responsible for the cost of an instrument (either a rented or purchased violin/viola/cello/bass). AMFS-owned scholarship instruments are also available.

Instrument Purchase or Rental Costs:

Rentals are generally $20-35/month and purchases start around $300. Don't buy an instrument from Amazon, the prices are tempting but the instruments are poor quality and will be hard for your student to learn to play on. Please add your instrument cost to the program cost to determine the total cost of participation.

Tuition and instrument scholarships (full and partial) are available to families who demonstrate significant financial need. We are also able to set up tuition payment plans for interested students/families.

Scholarship Policies and Agreement

Tuition Scholarship Participation Policy

Students who receive a tuition scholarship are REQUIRED to participate in the entirety of the AMFS Chamber Music Lab program. Please be sure you can commit to Chamber Music Lab for the duration of the program this school year (from registration through the spring Showcase concert) before requesting a tuition scholarship.

Instrument Scholarship Policy

All families are eligible to apply for an instrument scholarship to use an AMFS-owned instrument for the duration of the school year, while enrolled in Chamber Music Lab. If you are granted an instrument scholarship to use an AMFS-owned instrument this school year, please note that this instrument remains property of the AMFS and will need to be returned to the AMFS in good condition at the end of this year's Chamber Music Lab program. You and your family are responsible for damage and the cost of repairs to the instrument, outside of normal wear and tear.

Students have the option to check out instruments for summer use at the end of the school year program in May, pending an instrument condition check and approval by the AMFS Director of Education and Community Programs.

Student Responsibility:
Participation in Chamber Music Lab requires a high level of commitment and an understanding of the following expectations.

Chamber Music Lab participants are expected to practice consistently outside of ensemble coachings to make sure they can independently play their assigned parts.
- It's always more fun when everyone comes to coachings prepared so that Chamber Music Lab coaching sessions can be spent making music together, after the individual practicing has happened at home.
Chamber Music Lab participants are expected to take advantage of all three private lessons included in the program, with at least one private lesson completed before November.
- Ideally, Chamber Music Lab students would be enrolled in weekly or bi-weekly private lessons throughout the school year. The three private lessons included in program tuition are intended to get students started with private instruction.
Chamber Music Lab participants are expected to attend coachings regularly, with no more than two excused absences per semester.
- Please note that this is a 20+ week program and that students should commit to the entire series of chamber music coachings.
- Because chamber music typically involves only one student per part, absences can be detrimental to ensemble success.
- Conflicts and emergencies should be communicated to the Chamber Music Lab coaches or AMFS Education team as soon as they are known, or at a minimum, at least 24 hours before each coaching.
- If students have excessive absences or any unexcused absences, they may be asked to leave the Chamber Music Lab program.
