Introduction

The Aspen Music Festival and School's Lead Guitar program teaches classical guitar technique, music theory and literacy, performance skills, and ensemble playing in group classes. In this program, students develop their self-discipline, self-esteem, and ability to work as a team--attributes that help them realize success throughout their lives! The Lead Guitar curriculum emphasizes music reading, allowing students to become independent musicians and capable of taking their guitar skills to any style of playing.

The program is designed for students in grades 5 and up. Responsible 4th-graders are welcome to apply but will only be accepted on a space-available basis. Learn more.

The Aspen Music Festival and School's AfterWorks programming (after-school music education) also includes Maroon Bel Canto Choirs, Chamber Music Lab, and Beginning Strings. Students are welcome to participate in multiple programs.

The Lead Guitar program will run as an after-school program during the 2026-2027 school year for Green Circle and Blue Square classes, and in the Black Diamond Ensemble setting for advanced students.

All Roaring Fork Valley students (regardless of what school they attend during the school year) are welcome to participate at any school location. Transportation is not provided, and please note that rehearsal schedules are subject to change (although we hope they won't and will let you know if changes do occur!).

Previous Guitar Experience

All students will be assessed during the first week of the program to ensure they are placed into the appropriate class level.

If you have NOT participated in Lead Guitar previously, tell us how many years you have played; whether you've taken classes, lessons, or both; and what guitar style you've previously played (classical, folk, rock, etc.). Please indicate whether or not you read music.

Obtaining a Guitar

Students in Lead Guitar classes are required to have their own classical, nylon-string guitar. All students should have a guitar ready for the first day of Lead Guitar class. In order to procure a guitar, students have several options:

1. Purchase a guitar through the AMFS at a discounted Lead Guitar-student rate. There are three guitar options for purchase:

Yamaha CGS103A 3/4 size guitar and soft case: Lead Guitar price = $160
- Best for younger students (smaller guitar size) - MSRP $380
Yamaha C40 full size guitar and soft case: Lead Guitar price = $180
- Standard full-size model - MSRP $405
Yamaha CG102 full-size guitar and soft case: Lead Guitar price = $215
- Elevated full-size model - MSRP $480

2. Purchase a classical guitar (with nylon strings) and case, locally, from our friends at Glenwood Music.

3. Rent a guitar from the AMFS: A limited number of guitars are available to rent at the rate of $25 per month, for seven months.

4. Apply for an instrument scholarship to use an AMFS-owned guitar for the school year: A limited number of scholarship guitars are available to students who are unable to afford the cost of purchasing a guitar or renting an AMFS-owned guitar while enrolled in Lead Guitar.

5. Bring your own guitar: Students may bring their own guitars, but they MUST be classical guitars (have nylon strings). Not sure if your guitar is classical or acoustic? Watch this video, check the strings (classical guitars have three strings that look like clear plastic (nylon) while acoustic guitars have all metal strings), or take the guitar to Glenwood Music and have them identify it.

* We will bring instruments to each Lead Guitar school on the first day of classes for students who elect to purchase a guitar, students who are renting an AMFS-owned guitar, or students who are granted an instrument scholarship to use an AMFS-owned guitar.

Program Cost and Scholarship

Lead Guitar Program Cost: $265

Cost includes twenty weeks of classes or dedicated rehearsals taught by guitar specialists, performance opportunities, all music, and access to Lead Guitar digital resources.

Tuition scholarships (full and partial) are available to families who demonstrate significant financial need. Additionally, a limited number of instrument scholarships are available to students who are unable to afford the cost of purchasing or renting a guitar to use an AMFS-owned guitar while enrolled in Lead Guitar.

AMFS scholarship eligibility is based off of recent Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines for free/reduced lunch prices. Please answer the questions below so the AMFS can determine if you qualify. If these sections are left blank, we may not be able to consider you for scholarship. Scholarship Policies and Agreement

Tuition Scholarship Participation Policy

Students who receive a tuition scholarship are REQUIRED to participate in the entirety of the Lead Guitar program. Please be sure you can commit to Lead Guitar for the duration of the program this school year (mid-October through mid-April) before requesting a tuition scholarship.

If a scholarship student leaves or stops participating in Lead Guitar before the end of the program, they may be required to pay back the tuition scholarship they were granted.

Instrument Scholarship Policy

All families are eligible to apply for an instrument scholarship to use an AMFS-owned guitar for the duration of the school year, while enrolled in Lead Guitar.

If you are granted an instrument scholarship, please note that the guitar remains property of the AMFS and will need to be returned to the AMFS in good condition at the end of this year's Lead Guitar program. Students have the option to check out the guitar for summer use at the end of the Lead Guitar program in mid-April, pending an instrument condition check and approval by the AMFS Education and Community Coordinator.

If you are granted an instrument scholarship, you and your family are responsible for damage and the cost of repairs to the guitar, outside of normal wear and tear.
